Is potty training on your to do list this summer? If you’re considering it (due to school deadlines or otherwise), here’s what you should know:
Fewer layers make it easier to get to the potty in time
Let’s face it: doing the commando method is a lot more practical in warmer weather. Even if you’re not planning on your child going bare-bottomed, having to deal with fewer layers makes it easier to get on the potty in time. You often have only a few seconds’ warning, so that can make all the difference. Also, less clothing=less laundry when accidents happen.
Flexible schedules can help you focus…or not
For those whose summer schedules are more flexible than year-round, summer is prime time to potty train. You’ll be able to give potty training the time and attention it needs (they’re not exaggerating when they say it’s a full-time job). Not-as-packed calendars and more days spent at home can give you the breathing room to respond to accidents, give consistent potty reminders and create a low-pressure environment for you and your child. It’s not only about having more time—you being more relaxed will translate into a more relaxed child, which is so necessary for success.
A word of caution: Some kids are so busy running around outdoors in the summer, it’s harder for them to be aware of the need to go. So take into account your summer schedule and your child’s personality before going ahead.
Travel is still possible
You might not think of potty training as an ideal time to travel, but with a little planning, a lot of flexibility and a leap of faith, you don’t need to ditch your summer plans because of potty training.
While I wouldn’t recommend venturing out for too long during the initial phase, once your child has gotten the hang of going on the potty, you can go anywhere with our Folding Potty Seat and Folding Potty Chair.
The Folding Potty Seat allows your child to use any adult toilet comfortably (think airports, malls and amusement parks). It folds up small and comes with a convenient carry bag so it’s easy to take along anywhere.
The Folding Potty Chair is great for those times when you don’t have a public potty available and is a must for road trips and camping. It also folds up small and includes a travel bag. It also comes with 30 disposable liners to get you started.
Timing is everything
All the conveniences summer offers for potty training mean little if your child isn’t ready. The truly best time to potty train is when your child is showing all the signs of readiness and is emotionally ready to start. That’s the real game-changer that sets them up for potty training success.
