Nobody hands you a manual for the diaper bag.

You just suddenly have a baby, a bag full of tiny clothes and approximately 14 things you didn't know you needed.

The good news? You don't need to know everything. You just need a system.

1. Learn the Three Most Important Locations

Before you leave the house, know where to find:

Diapers. Wipes. Change of clothes.

Those are the items you're most likely to need quickly. If you know where they are, you're already ahead of the game.

2. Refill What You Use

If you take the last two diapers out, replace them.

If the wipes are almost gone, add a new pack.

If you used the backup outfit, put another one in.

Think of the diaper bag like a gas tank: don't wait until it's completely empty to refill it.

3. Don't Overpack

More stuff doesn't necessarily mean you're more prepared.

For a quick outing, you probably don't need five outfits, every toy your baby owns and enough supplies to survive a weekend.

Start with the essentials and add based on where you're going and how long you'll be gone.

4. Use the Pockets

This sounds obvious.

It isn't.

If your diaper bag has dedicated pockets, use them. Keep the same things in the same places every time.

For example:

Front pocket: quick-grab items
Main compartment: clothes and larger essentials
Bottle pockets: feeding supplies
Small pockets: pacifier, keys, wallet and other small items

The exact setup doesn't matter nearly as much as having a setup.

5. Keep a Backup Outfit

Babies are unpredictable.

The outfit that looks perfectly clean when you leave the house can become very much not clean five minutes later.

Keep at least one backup outfit in the bag at all times.

And remember to replace it after you use it.

6. Make the Bag Yours, Too

If you're sharing a diaper bag, don't think of it as “Mom's bag that Dad carries.”

It's a piece of gear you're both using.

Put your wallet, keys, sunglasses or other everyday items somewhere accessible. If you're the one taking the baby out, you shouldn't have to reorganize the entire bag first.

7. Figure Out What Your Baby Actually Needs

Every baby is different.

Some babies need a pacifier every 12 minutes. Others couldn't care less.

Some go through three outfits in an afternoon. Others somehow stay spotless all day.

Pay attention to what your baby actually uses.

After a few outings, you'll start to develop your own packing routine and you'll probably discover a few things you never leave home without.
