A Quick History
Baby Safety Month goes back further than most people realize. It started in 1983 as a single day called "Expectant Mother's Day," created by what was then the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). By 1986, that single day had grown into a full week. By 1991, it had grown again — into the month-long observance we now know every September.
That organization has grown right alongside it. Originally chartered in 1962 after a group of juvenile product manufacturers banded together to fight an unfair tax on car seats, the group rebranded in June 2025 as the Baby Safety Alliance — a name that better reflects what it's actually been doing for over 60 years: setting safety standards, testing products, and advocating for babies across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
What the Baby Safety Alliance Actually Does
The Baby Safety Alliance's work runs on four pillars: advocacy, product safety, education, and philanthropy. In practice, that looks like:
- The Verification Program, which independently tests baby products against rigorous safety and performance standards — products that pass earn the Baby Safety Alliance Verified Seal
- Baby Safety University, a free education hub offering expert-backed guidance for parents and caregivers
- The Baby Safety Foundation, the Alliance's charitable arm, which channels industry resources to families in need
September is when all of that work gets a spotlight — a dedicated month to remind parents, caregivers, and brands alike to double-check the safety of the products and spaces around their babies.
